This was an installation in a lift at the Edinburgh School of Art (oddly enough). I nicked the idea off Becky Campbell who was, at that time, doing small unobtrusive constructions hidden away in corners and suchlike. I wondered how I would go about making something in a similar vein, and then I noticed the lift manufacturer’s name (Kone). The reference is to Cezanne’s “sphere, cone and cylinder” comment, and the art history myth that Picasso’s misinterpretation of this resulted in cubism; hence the “mistake” carried on into sphear (kone) and sylinder. I signed and dated the piece in an appropriate manner.
